03 / FIELD NOTES

See the CPU x86-64-v level

Download, inspect, and run the upstream CPU check before choosing a supported kernel package.

Changes configxanmodbbrcpu

Why this way

XanMod is optional. Check the CPU level before you touch a kernel package. Guessing v3 on a v2 host wastes a reboot; this site refuses to install a kernel from a field-note page.

When to use

You are about to install an XanMod kernel and need v2, v3, or v4.

When not to

This does not install a kernel. Do not treat the script as an installer.

Prerequisites

  • wget
  • x86_64 CPU
  • outbound HTTPS to dl.xanmod.org

Steps

Download the check script

Changes config
wget -qO check_x86-64_psabi.sh https://dl.xanmod.org/check_x86-64_psabi.sh

Expect: check_x86-64_psabi.sh appears in the current directory.

Review the downloaded script

Read-only
less check_x86-64_psabi.sh

Expect: Read the script before granting execution. Press q to leave less.

Make it executable

Changes config
chmod +x check_x86-64_psabi.sh

Expect: ls -l shows the execute bit.

Print the x86-64-v level

Changes config
./check_x86-64_psabi.sh || true

Expect: Stdout shows x86-64-vN. The exit status is level+1 (not a failure). Match the result to packages listed upstream; a v4 CPU can use a compatible v3 package.

What it changes

Downloads and executes third-party code after you review it; no kernel installation in this note.
